As an international student, there are many different procedures you will need to understand and navigate when applying to US universities. Here is a breakdown of the three most important factors: admission, funding and visas.
Adoption
Most US universities require foreign applicants to take English as a second language test, such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) tests for graduate students or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) for graduates.
You should aim to complete these exams a year before you want to start university, usually in August.
Timings FOr Appointment
The deadline for pre-university appointments is usually 10 months before the start of the course: mid-October or early November. If you are accepted by the first decision, you are legally obliged to go to that institution, so you should only apply first to make one university that you are sure you want to go to.
In all other universities, the application deadline is usually in January – seven months before you intend to start university – although the latest deadlines are in March.

Graduates of science, technology, engineering or mathematics can extend their OPT for another 17 months, and stay for more than two years to work in these fields. The J1 visa applies to programs and technology projects that provide training that you may not receive in your home country, for example, a business training program, a job training program and a doctor’s program.
